Each year our Holiday Food Program provides Christmas food baskets, toys and books to 2,500 families (12,500 people) living in poverty in the Los Angeles area. All of the families are referred through the Head Start Program and meet federal and state mandated poverty levels.
In the spirit of the holidays, each child receives books and toys given personally by Santa and every family takes home a basket overflowing with all the makings of a wonderful holiday meal: a turkey, rolls, carrots, squash, potatoes, yams, onions, rice, beans, bags of apples and oranges, candy, a fresh apple pie and canned goods.
Our Holiday Food Program is dependent on the support and involvement of people living within our community. Over 2,000 volunteers come together at the Barker Hangar to sort and package the food during the week before the actual giveaway, and most importantly, are on hand at our various Head Start distribution centers to personally give out the food with a sense of caring and family involvement.
Living in poverty is especially hard during the holidays when there are no resources to make the holiday special. The food, toys, books and celebration provided by the One Voice volunteers bring much needed hope to families living in poverty that lasts well beyond the holiday season.
The Holiday Food Program takes place over the course of 4 days and nights. The first night over 2,000 volunteers gather at the Barker Hangar to sort food for our 2,500 families. The second night we fill food boxes and load the over 5,000 boxes and bags of food into trucks that will go to the various distribution centers throughout Los Angeles. These are fun and festive nights with music playing as people celebrate coming together to help others in need. On Saturday volunteers help deliver the food and toys to the 7 distribution centers. Sunday is the actual giveaway day when the families arrive and are greeted by hundreds of volunteers who give out the food, toys and books with hugs and warmth as we welcome the parents and children into the One Voice family.
One Voice has gift cards available which you can give as presents to your friends, family and business associates. In their name, each card provides one low income family within our community with a basket of food for Christmas. One Voice also has scholarship gift cards available that help low income high school students realize their dreams of attending first-rate colleges. These cards make wonderful personal or corporate gifts that will share the meaning of the holidays by helping a family in need.
The purchase of One Voice gift cards is considered a donation and is tax deductible. Cards can be personalized with a printed logo, a special greeting or your name printed in calligraphy. The text is printed on the front or the inside flap of each card.
You can also place your order by calling One Voice @ (310) 458-9961 or fax us @ (310) 395-8740 or email your order to email@example.com.
Food Basket Gift Cards are priced at $35 per card, which is our cost for providing a food basket to a family.
- Food Basket Gift Card Text:
This holiday season an underprivileged family living in our community will receive a large basket of food in your name through One Voice. This basket will be stuffed with all the makings of a special holiday dinner: a fresh turkey, rolls, carrots, squash, potatoes, yams, onions, rice, beans, bags of apples, oranges, candy, a fresh apple pie and canned goods. Because of this gift to you, a family will be able to share a traditional meal and feel the holiday spirit knowing that someone cares.”
- Scholars Program Gift Card Text:
A wonderful holiday donation has been made to the One Voice Robert W. Sanderson Scholarship Program in your name. This gift to you will extend the spirit of the holiday season by helping talented and hopeful low income high school students realize their dreams of attending first-rate colleges.
Because of this generous holiday gift made on your behalf, we will be able to help prepare our students for college admission and make sure that each of our scholarship recipients receives clothing, books, travel expenses and much needed school supplies for their years in college. Since the economic situation of our students’ families is so meager, there are no resources to pay for these important necessities.
All of our students come to us with simple dreams: a future, a college education, and giving back to the world. This gift, given to you in the true meaning of the holiday spirit, will deeply touch the lives of our students and help make dreams come true.”
